Kayaking in Denmark and Norway

July 25, 2009

I have updated with one kayaking destination in Denmark and one in Norway. Denmark offers good kayaking and you can choose from really good surfing to calm and relaxed paddling in protected water. Norway is so beautiful and offers kayaking in fjords and archipelagos along an amazing coastline with dramatic mountains. Tomorrow I’m going for a longer trip in Stockholm Archipelago and I will update with new kayaking destinations when I get back home. Keep on paddling!

Orust Seakayaking Symposium

July 23, 2009

28 – 30 of August it is time for the annual Stockenträffen at Orust. Orust is located at the Swedish west coast, 100 km (62 miles) north of Göteborg. This symposium is the largest in Sweden and last year it was over 200 participants from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, USA, UK, Canada and maybe some more countries:)

The area is perfect for all kind of paddling. For beginners there is always protected places to go to. For the more experienced the strait between Vallerö and Härmanö is often a good spot for surfing and rockhopping. Last year a few of us were lucky to spot a humback whale. Unfortunately I was to excited to think about the camera. Well, I did but I just took the picture in same second as the fen was subsurfaced. Luckily for us that Erik had his nerves under control and took some pictures.

This year Nigel Foster is planned to have courses. Last year Freya Hoffmeister had courses but she is still downunder and will not make it this year. The program updates by Orust Kajak. Orust Kajak is the organizer of the Stockenträffen.

For those who want to play in white water there is often very good conditions

There is also good opportunities to have a more relaxed paddle. Maybe to Gullholmen and to have an ice cream in the charming surrondings

Trying to focus is hard

July 20, 2009

At them moment I’m writing on an article about kayaking in Norway but can’t keep my focus. I’m also planning for my next trip to the Archipelago of Stockholm next week. So to stay focused on my article I started to go through the pics from my trip to Norway. All of sudden my writing went so much easier. Unfortunately I can’t publish my best pics from the trip to Norway here until the magazine, Paddling, has made their choices.

Treasure hunt

July 18, 2009

At the 12 of september in 1745 the East Indiaman “Götheborg” ran aground at the entrance to Göteborg. The ship was fully laden with goods such as tea, porcelain, silk and spices, and had almost reached dock after her third voyage to China. A marine archaeological excavation lasting from 1986 to 1992 opened the door to a by gone century, adventurous voyages and trade with China. And awakened the dream of rebuilding the ship. In 2004 the dream was fulfilled and a reconstruction of a ship from the mid-18th century was built. Götheborg III is now one of the largest fullrigged wooden sailing ships in the world

We paddled to the Island of Knippelholmen very close to the underwater cliff where Götheborg ran aground. Still today it is possible to find porcelain chips from the sunken ship at the beach at Knippelholmen.

SeaBird Designs new designer

July 11, 2009

After a tip from I got the information that Björn Thomasson is going to be a new designer for the Norweigan kayak manufacturer Seabird Designs. That will be very interesting. Björn Thomasson already design kayak models such the Black Pearl. I would really like to have one but I’m not that handy to build one by myself. The Black Pearl production shall start during this year according to SeaBird Designs.

Rolling exercise

July 4, 2009

I have been practising rolling technique last weekend. I need to improve my technique, especially on my weak side. The hardest thing to me is to stay calm subsurfaced. To my help I had my friend Tomas who is an excellent roller.
